Research Objectives: Children with cerebral palsy have problems in reaching, grasping, releasing and manipulation in upper extremity functions. Due to upper extremity hypertonus, the hand and arm are usually in an abnormal posture that causes limitation in daily living activities. There are also sensory modulation disorders, poor sensory recording and sensory discrimination problems in children with cerebral palsy, but studies in this area are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between bilateral hand use and sensory profile of children with cerebral palsy and activities of daily living.

Design: This study examined the relationship between three variables. In the study, it was examined whether the variables had an effect on each other.

Setting: This study was carried out in Hacettepe University Faculty of Health Sciences, Occupational Therapy Department, Pediatrics unit.

Participants: 58 children with cerebral palsy aged between 6 and 10 were included in the study.

Interventions: no intervention

Main Outcome Measures: Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI), Abilhand-Kids Test, The Sensory Profile.

Results: There was a significant correlation between all sub-parameters of the PEDI test (self-care, mobility, and social function) and the Abilhand test (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between all sub-parameters of the PEDI test and the parameters of the Sensory Profile test regarding tactile, multi-sensory processing, endurance and tone-related sensory processing, movement, and body position; there was a negative correlation between the parameter of behavioral outcomes of sensory processing (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: While creating an intervention program for limited daily living activities in children with cerebral palsy, the effectiveness of the intervention is very important by evaluating the underlying disorders of bilateral hand use and sensory processing skills.
