Over my research career, I have emphasized supporting healthcare professionals, by providing support to enable them to provide the most effective approaches available. During my tenure in the clinic, it was apparent that the practical knowledge of occupational therapists did not match the volume of research available. I have extensive experience as a clinical occupational therapist working on a spinal cord injury unit at the former Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) -- now known as the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab -- which is the premier rehabilitation hospital in the United States. In my fourth year at RIC, I applied for and received the Buchannan Fellowship from the RIC Academy to conduct a preliminary clinical research project where I surveyed (n=57) therapists working at spinal cord injury centers in order to assess the state of occupational therapy practice associated with clinical deployment of electrical stimulation. As part of my recent doctoral work, I completed a subsequent study exploring the use of clinical practice guidelines among therapists (n=7), as well as ran focus groups with content experts in order to generate a written guide to the application of the treatment in question. Additionally, I am the Co-PD/PI on the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students, where we secured $3.25 million over 5 years for students in scholarship funds for students in the University of New Mexico’s Occupational Therapy program. My current work addresses the needs of therapists in urban and rural environment in the state of New Mexico with an emphasis quality measurement and interventions.
