Andrew B. & Gretchen P. Jones Professor
Washington University School of Medicine
Dr. Lee is Andrew B. & Gretchen P. Jones Professor of Neurology at Washington University School of
Medicine and Neurologist-in-Chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. His lab engages in Translational research
to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in acute and chronic brain injury, focusing on
Ischemic stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. An additional focus of the lab is neuroplasticity and brain
repair after stroke. A major motivation of the lab is to identify strategies and targets for mitigating brain
injury and enhancing brain repair after injury. The lab utilizes cutting-edge approaches in molecular
biology, mouse genetics, neuroimaging (microscopic and mesoscopic), advanced image analysis (data-
driven and machine learning approaches), advanced statistical approaches, and genomics. A unique
aspect of the Lee lab is its bi-directional approach to translational research—taking advantage of
traditional forward-translational (bench-to-bedside) and reverse-translational (bedside-to-bench)
approaches. Thus, the lab is facile in both human clinical studies and studies utilizing cellular and animal
disease models.
Dr. Lee graduated from Yale College with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biophysics in 1985 and
earned an MD and PhD in Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College in 1993. After completing
neurology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and fellowship training in vascular
neurology at Washington University, he joined the faculty at Washington University in 1997, where he
has since remained. Dr. Lee’s research focuses on the pathophysiology and cellular/molecular
mechanisms of brain injury following acute ischemia and chronic neurodegeneration. He has received
numerous awards for teaching and has mentored over 30 students, post-docs, and junior faculty, many
of whom are independent researchers at academic medical centers. In addition, he has been recognized
in the “Best Doctors in America” list since 2009.
