A.Personal Statement:
I am an occupational therapy graduate student whose research focus is on the neurorehabilitation field. My current work addresses motor recovery after stroke as I am examining the roles of nonprimary motor areas in the recovery of upper extremity functions post-stroke. I believe that my work will provide a foundation for mechanism-informed evidence-based interventions. My research experience began with my Physical Therapy undergraduate thesis which was about a case-control study to assess balance in an individual with Parkinson’s disease. In addition to reviewing the literature on Parkinson’s disease for this thesis, I was trained to administer assessments for data collection and summarize and interpret the results. My research skills were further polished with the Occupational Therapy master thesis that I completed. It was about the effect of productivity requirements on skilled nursing facility occupational therapy practitioners' experiences of job satisfaction and potential moral distress. Working on this thesis expanded my knowledge and experience in research conduct as I was heavily trained with my collogues on sound methods for literature review, data collection using focus group, analyzing, and interpreting the research qualitative results. Before I begin my Ph.D. degree, I had several opportunities to direct thesis groups as a thesis advisor back in my country. This experience not only supplemented my research skills, but also provided me with leadership and counseling roles. Collectively, these experiences enhanced my role as a reviewer for data selection in a scoping review about factors that impact real-world hand use after stroke. Overall, the above-stated experiences will enhance my role as a scientific researcher.

C. Contributions to Science
1. Examining balance among individuals with Parkinson’s disease. We conducted a case-control study to assess balance in an individual with Parkinson’s disease. We examined the use of Biodex Balance system for assessing postural stability, limits of stability, and fall risks. The results revealed a significant disturbance of balance parameters in the individual with Parkinson’s disease compared to a healthy individual. Though this was a case study, it gave novel insights into the mechanisms that could alter the balance recovery in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

2. Determining the effects of productivity requirements on skilled nursing facility occupational therapy practitioners. We explored the effects of productivity requirements on skilled nursing facility occupational therapy practitioners' experiences of job satisfaction and potential moral distress. This qualitative study embedded focus group as the predominant collection method. Our team documented the results about how OT practitioners can benefit from being prepared to manage situations that can cause heightened stress.
