Associate Professor
University of Kansas Medical Center
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology. I completed a fellowship in vascular neurology and spent the first 6 years of my career dually specializing in stroke and concussion. I spent the early part of my research career focused on stroke research. I have participated in clinical trials related to both acute stroke trial interventions and stroke rehabilitation examining aerobic exercise and activity post stroke. I was appointed as Director of Ischemic Stroke Research in which I helped to coordinate all ischemic stroke studies. I’ve been co-author on multiple papers in relation to the research regarding exercise after stroke, one of which was awarded the Golden Synapse award for best article of 2012.
I have served on the Physician Leadership Committee of the Center for Concussion Management since it's inception in 2011 and have served as the Center's Medical Director since 2016. In August 2018, I transitioned full time to sports neurology and concussion management. In that role I have been a Certified ImPACT Consultant since 2012. Currently, I am working with our concussion center to develop studies related to measures to evaluate and treat patients with mild traumatic brain injury. I have been awarded a CTSA/Frontiers pilot award to study MR Spectroscopy in post-concussion. I have developed multiple, investigator initiated studies with colleagues looking at rehabilitation, nutrition, driving, and sleep. I have completed a pilot study involving a dietary intervention with ketogenic diet for concussion. I have a current treatment trial with an investigational drug in the subacute period that is investigator initiated with support from the pharmaceutical company. I am involved as a site investigator in the multi-center trial, HeadSMART, evaluating biomarkers after concussion.
