Robert Scales, Ph.D. is a Mayo Clinic Assistant Professor of Medicine and the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness. His primary research focus is the application of effective communication in the healthcare setting. He was the Principal Investigator in the Cardiovascular Health Initiative and Lifestyle Education (CHILE) Study, the first study to investigate the impact of motivational interviewing on the behaviors of patients attending cardiac rehabilitation. Currently, he is Principal Investigator in a multi-site medical education research trial to evaluate the effect of online learning to teach effective communication, innovation and technology in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Scales is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and an advisory board member of the International Concussion Society.
