Director of Amputee Rehabilitation, Limb Loss, Prosthetics and Orthoics
TIRR Memorial Hermann, UT Houston, Texas, United States
Currently I serve as the Director of the Limb Loss, Amputee Rehabilitation and Prosthetics and Orthotics program at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital. We have one of the country’s largest and most comprehensive amputee rehabilitation programs and partner with one of the country’s busiest trauma centers and assist in the rehabilitation of amputees from across the world. I also have an appointment as Assistant Professor with the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department and teach the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residents didactics in prosthetics, orthotics, osseointegration, amputee pre-operative and post-operative care and the rehabilitation process. I am the only fellowship graduate from the University of Texas Ortho Trauma and PM&R Departments with a focus on Amputee Rehabilitation which allowed me to focus on the care of traumatic amputees with multi-limb amputations and poly-trauma. We have robust Osseointegration Program with approximately 20 patients who have undergone 2 stage osseointegration and completed or are in the process of completing the osseointegration rehabilitation protocol. During my residency, we developed and delivered the first 3D printed myoelectric prosthesis in the country of Jamaica. We worked with a non-profit group, Zion International, to donate a 3D printer and educate the rehabilitation staff at Jamaica’s only rehabilitation hospital on how to use the 3D printer to assist their patients in obtaining cost effective orthotics and prosthetics componentry. I previously served as a American Board Certified Prosthetist before attending medical school and worked as a Board Certified Prosthetist for 5 years, assisting individuals with limb loss by making both upper and lower extremity prostheses, specializing in prosthetic gait training and alignment. This gives me a unique perspective on amputee care. I work with a multidisciplinary team of care providers with the main goal of serving our patient's needs and helping them achieve their functional goals.
