Dr. Sheila Murphy, DNP RN-BC, PCCN-K has degrees in Biology from Boston University and Nursing from Northeastern University. After over twenty years in bedside nursing at Boston Medical Center (BMC), she was inspired by a multidisciplinary group working on decreasing alarm fatigue to return to school and obtain her Master’s in Nursing with an emphasis on education. But it was a multidisciplinary committee made up of Physical Therapists, quality nurses, medical doctors, informatics specialists, and nurse leaders that provided the impetus to completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The scholarly project that was the capstone of her education was the implementation of the Johns Hopkins Mobility Goal Calculator as a pilot program on a 48-bed medical surgical unit at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Murphy serves as co- chair of the on the multidisciplinary Falls Committee, and as a member of the safety committees focused on suicide and restraints. Dr. Murphy volunteers as Vice Chair of the Diagnosis and Treatment Health Equity Committee for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Cancer Coalition. She serves on two committees on the national level for the United States Hunter Jumper Association including the Horse and Rider Advocates Committee that focuses on horse and rider welfare and the Safety Committee that spearheaded helmet research to prevent concussion and catastrophic traumatic brain injury resulting from falls. She coached the Stonehill College Equestrian Team to a National Championship in 2003 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
