Dora Kanellopoulos, PhD is Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine with an appointment as Associate Attending Psychologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Kanellopoulos received her doctoral degree in Neuropsychology at the City University of New York Graduate School and completed her psychology internship at Northwell Health in the departments of Neurology and Psychiatry. Dr. Kanellopoulos’ clinical work focuses on behavioral interventions for treatment of severe mental illness. Her research has focused on clarifying the reciprocal association of psychiatric and cognitive dysfunction geriatric mood disorders.
At the onset of the pandemic, she developed a telemental health program to facilitate communication between clinicians and patients to mitigate transmission risk, and developed a free mental health clinic for hospitalized COVID survivors who would not otherwise have access to treatment. In collaboration with colleagues in the department of psychiatry, Dr. Kanellopoulos helped develop and deploy CopeNYP, a program using evidence-based interventions to provide short-term psychotherapy to support the mental health needs of employees affected by the pandemic. These efforts were published in several peer reviewed journals to date.
Most recently, Dr. Kanellopoulos has been actively involved in program development for patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders and in recovery from addiction. She has developed programs utilizing technological innovations (e.g., Virtual Reality, tablets) to augment care as usual in inpatient settings. Further, she has worked on making therapeutic services available to inpatients in quarantine and those with disabilities (e.g., hearing, visual impairment) by modifying treatment delivery using technological innovations. Dr. Kanellopoulos is actively engaged in teaching, mentoring, and patient care and is the author of over 50 publications.
