I am an industrial organizational psychologist with specific training and expertise in teams and teamwork, training and development, patient safety and quality improvement, and creativity and innovation in organizations. My research integrates my expertise in these areas across the clinical to translational research spectrum to enhance the creation, training and development, and performance of interprofessional teams to improve healthcare delivery, quality improvement, patient safety, and creativity and innovation in healthcare. I am currently the Principal Investigator (PI) on a team development grant leading a qualitative research study to identify and describe the experience of teamwork pre-, during-, and post-telehealth appointments as reported by healthcare professionals and staff, patients, and caregivers, and to explore teamwork training needs for these individuals when telehealth is used for patient appointments. I also currently serve as co-PI on a state funded project to support interprofessional quality improvement teams in rural critical access hospitals and rural health clinics as they engage in quality improvement activities to improve fall risk reduction and prevention practices for older adults in rural Nebraska. I have also contributed as a co-investigator and subject matter expert in teamwork and innovation within different interprofessional teams at UNMC, where I have developed and implemented team-training for interprofessional student teams interacting with survivors of stroke via telehealth technologies to provide post-rehabilitation support, and for officers of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service participating in the Deployment Safety Academy for Field Experiences (D-SAFE) program. My long-term goal is to develop and disseminate evidence-based team training interventions for healthcare providers, staff, patients, and caregivers and evaluate the impact of these interventions on the experience, effectiveness, and outcomes of in-person and virtual care encounters. I am also a team strategies and tools to enhance performance and patient safety (TeamSTEPPS) trainer and have delivered team skills training to health professions students at UNMC, healthcare professionals in hospital and ambulatory care clinic settings.
