Shilpa Krishnan, PT, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory University. Dr. Krishnan has expertise in user experience (UX) research, health services research, and implementation science. Dr. Krishnan’s research focuses on patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), comparing the effectiveness of interventions to improve functional outcomes, assessing managing caregiver burden, and prevention and early detection of secondary complications such as pressure injuries. The overarching goal of Dr. Krishnan’s research is to improve the effectiveness of health care and stakeholder-centered outcomes by exploring the utilization of health services. Dr. Krishnan has received prestigious awards such as the Mary Switzer fellowship in 2017 (funded by the ACL), Learning Health Systems (LHS) Scholar in 2021 (funded by the NIH), and CoHSTAR faculty fellow in 2022-2024 (funded by the American Physical Therapy Association). Krishnan’s team is leading the PT evaluation across 2 sites in Atlanta for the RECOVER-long COVID study. Dr. Krishnan serves as the implementation scientist on an STTR grant (funded by the NIH) to evaluate the outcomes of a clinical decision tool by Phrase Health in four hospital systems.
Dr. Krishnan has been a reviewer for the NIH STTR/SBIR study section, National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, American Occupational Therapy Association, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Krishnan serves as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Acute Care Physical Therapy and Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation; and a reviewer of prestigious journals, including, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Gerontologist. Dr. Krishnan serves on the leadership panel of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Networking group at the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of Georgia and Young and the Restless of Atlanta (a young stroke survivor support group).
As a consultant for the Board of Medicine, Dr. Krishnan is involved in developing and strategizing research initiatives for the Board using digital wearable therapeutics.
