Steve Flanagan is highly recognized, nationally and internationally, as one of the leading experts in the area of brain injury rehabilitation. He joined NYU Langone Health and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 2008 as Howard A. Rusk Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine and Medical Director of Rusk Rehabilitation. He previously served as Vice Chairman of Rehabilitation Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
He serves on several national and international medical advisory boards as well as the editorial board for the Journal of Head trauma Rehabilitation. He served in multiple leadership roles for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation where he is currently President. He authored numerous chapters and peer-reviewed publications, and participated in both federally and industry sponsored research. He served as Panel Chair for several national review panels including the Veterans Administration and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program-Department of Defense program for traumatic brain injury. He received awards for his work as an educator, clinician and advocate for people with brain injury from several organizations, including the Brain Injury Association of New York State, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Brain Injury Assistance, North American Brain Injury Association, and Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School. Castle Connolly has continually listed him as one of America’s Top Doctors since 2010.
