Matthew N. Bartels is the Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Health System/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He received his MD and MPH degrees from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons followed by Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Programs at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He was the inaugural John A. Downey Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons where he established the Human Performance Laboratory at Columbia University and directed Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation there until September 2013 when he assumed the chairmanship at the Montefiore Health System.
Dr. Bartels has published multiple scientific and review papers and is an invited speaker both in the United States and internationally. His particular areas of interest include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, heart and lung transplant rehabilitation, biomechanical interventions for musculoskeletal pain, exercise and cognition, and development of new models of post acute care delivery. Most recently he has interest in exercise as an intervention for improving social function and cognition in schizophrenia and improving access to rehabilitation services in international settings.
