Epidemiologist

Mehret Assefa, PhD, MPH is the Epidemiologist for WRIISC-WOMEN at VA Palo Alto. After studying global health with a focus on infectious diseases at UCLA Fielding School of Public, she went on to do her postdoctoral training at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. While there, Dr. Assefa led a community-based participatory research study to evaluate help-seeking behaviors, health beliefs, and traditional practices among resettled refugees. At Stanford University School of Medicine, her research focused on the implementation and sustainment of integrated services for persons with co-occurring disorders, expanding access to medications for opioid use disorder in primary care, integrating behavioral health in primary care, and advancing the use of organizational measures. Most recently, Dr. Assefa worked at the Naval Health Research Center where she led a project on the mental health and subsequent quality of life among injured service members.
