Kathryn Farris, OTR/L has over 30 years of professional experience. She received her Occupational Therapy degree from College of St Catherine in 1993 and has specialized in rehabilitation of the acquired brain injury population. Additional clinical experiences include Multiple Sclerosis, SCI and general orthopedic rehab. Her current role as the Clinical Education Coordinator across the brain injury program at Shepherd Center entails professional education development and dissemination, development and management of patient/family education platforms, facilitation of competency-based training, and brain injury program development. She works collaboratively with Brain Injury leadership and the community to identify and provide resources to enhance the care of people with brain injuries, facilitates evidence-based standards of care, and leads and supports of quality improvement initiatives at Shepherd Center. Other professional responsibilities include delivery of clinical care as an Occupational Therapist and as the former Occupational Therapy Manager supervising therapists from ICU to rehab. Clinical specialties across her career include physical handling, therapeutic management of abnormal tone and spasticity, assessment and treatment of vision and perception, management of persons with emerging disorders of consciousness, acquisition and clinical integration of rehabilitation technologies, and the facilitation of clinician- based research activities. Kathryn led the development an implementation of inpatient vision services in collaboration with an eye care professional from the Atlanta community specializing in neurologic impairments and rehabilitation, and she led a multi-center TBI Model Systems clinical leadership project assessing clinical practices and development of a professional education curriculum for sexuality and intimacy in brain injury rehabilitation. She has presented regionally and nationally on numerous brain injury and rehabilitation topics and is an active participant in American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Brain Injury Task Forces.
