Jennifer experienced a stroke in 2012 that left her unable to speak and unable to move the right side of her body. She felt completely lost upon discharge after over a month in the rehabilitation ward at her local hospital. She has direct experience with stroke rehabilitation, which contributes to the design of the TRAIL study and the application of the findings. Jennifer is also a patient partner on the TRAIL RCT research study where she is responsible for delivering the Education control arm to participants. She also assists with recruiting participants and joins the weekly organization meetings.
Jennifer has extensive experience as a volunteer with the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation. She has contributed as a member of the Vascular Cognitive Impairment Council, where she worked with researchers and other community members to consider priorities and opportunities in detecting, treating, managing and recovering from vascular cognitive impairment. The council’s work helped guide action and determine how Heart & Stroke can deliver the greatest impact for those living with vascular cognitive impairment.
Jennifer is an advocate and voice for individuals living with stroke and have engaged in speaking engagements at scientific conferences, presentations to health professionals, and media. This includes the 2023 Canadian Women’s Heart Health Summit, the 2018 World Stroke Congress, the British Heart Foundation and many Heart & Stroke events. Through these platforms, she is able to assist in the dissemination of findings to researchers, healthcare professionals and individuals with stroke and their families.
