Dr. Mandi Sonnenfeld is currently completing a joint postdoctoral fellowship as a Delivery System Science Fellow (DSSF) with Academy Health and a Health Professions Education, Evaluation, and Research (HPEER) advanced postdoctoral fellow at Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. As a fellow, she has participated in curriculum development for the national VA Quality Scholars and Leading Healthcare Improvement educational program. Dr. Sonnenfeld has an interest in health care operations and has begun the process of working on two national quality improvement research projects with the VA health care system: (1) the national VA Lung Precision Oncology Program (LPOP) and (2) the VA National Telestroke Program (NTSP). She has been a licensed occupational therapist (OT) for 21 years and received her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. As an OT, she has worked in various environments (e.g., skilled nursing, inpatient rehabilitation, community re-entry, outpatient rehabilitation, and the home environment) and acquired hands-on experience with a variety of patient diagnoses, such as stroke, lower extremity fractures, upper extremity fractures, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and generalized debility. Dr. Sonnenfeld’s dissertation focused on conducting population health services research using the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE) linked with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services datafiles to examine the longitudinal effect of vision impairment and health outcomes among older Mexican Americans. Her health service research interests include implementation science methodology, quality improvement, and patient safety among older adults living with disability.
