Dr. Burch is a Professor of Epidemiology at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and Population Health, and he has an adjunct faculty appointment at the University of South Carolina Cancer Prevention and Control Program. He possesses a PhD in Environmental Health Science with a specialization in Epidemiology, and a MS degree in Pharmaceutical Science with a specialization in Pharmacology. He also possesses a professional certification (Certificate of Completion) in heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) from the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance. Dr. Burch’s career spans more than 25 years of research supervision and project management in the human population sciences. He has served as Principal Investigator (PI) or Multi-PI for several randomized controlled trials that examined the efficacy of HRVB for symptom management among patients with chronic pain, sickle cell disease, and cancer. He is currently the PI of a VCU Massey Cancer Center Research Accelerator Monies award that will evaluate the use of HRVB for sleep improvement and stress management among professional firefighters.
