Director, Health Design Lab; Professor, Emergency Medicine
Health Design Lab, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University
In my role as the Director of the Health Design Lab, my work focuses on the application of human-centered design to healthcare. I started the first program in a medical school that teaches design thinking and I have shared the methodology of our design process in my book, Health Design Thinking. In the book, I provide principles and methods that can help physicians and designers to collaborate on improving the spaces, products/devices and services of healthcare. The portfolio of my work has been diverse ranging from the utilization of 3D printing for surgical planning to optimizing clinical spaces through GIS mapping and VR.
In the past 7 years, I have mentored and advised >20 teams composed of medical and industrial design students to create prototypes of new medical devices. Examples of projects that were filed for provisional patents include:
Ventilaire (Tracheal Cuff Pressure Monitor)
Owl Medical TurnTimer (Pressure Ulcer Prevention Tool)
Soriya (Apparel Systems and Methods for Applying Topical Treatments)
Alaflex (Hidradentis Suppurativa Wound Care System)
Episition (Epidural Positioning Cushion)
Tilt (Portable pelvic examination positioning device)
Flipcatch (Clean-Catch Midstream Urine Collection System)
Earpeace (Sound Dampening Headband for Infants)
Respiro (An Accessory for Removing and Sequestering Waste Anesthetic Gas)
Grip N’Go (Improving Toilet Transfers for Wheelchair Users)
