Disability resulting from Delayed treatment after a Copperhead snake bite to the hand.

Research Objectives: To alert the audience as to the progression of symptoms after a poisonous snake bite
To alert the audience as to the guidelines for the use of antivenom serum
To alert the audience as to the potentially disabling symptoms of a poisonous snake bite

Design: This is a case study describing a venomous snake bite with well documented progression prior to and during hospitalization. Medical and OT professionals contributed to the care and follow up with OT was used to progressed to near complete resolution of symptoms

Setting: A Case study of a young male in a large population center seen at a major medical facility. This differs to many of the potential scenarios of patients in less developed areas of the world

Participants: Case study of one patient

Interventions: Antivenom
Antibiotics
IV fluids
Occupational therapy

Main Outcome Measures: Resolution of edema
resolution of stiffness in from of the fingers as well as edema of the UE

Results: Resolution of symptoms illustrated by sequential photos and labs

Conclusions: This study illustrates the delays in treatment inherent after a venomous snake bite, even though it occurred in large city and large medical center
