Research Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of proprioceptive treatment with a hyperboloid combined with tongue-palate exercises versus proprioceptive treatment with a hyperboloid alone on joint mobility in individuals with TMD.
Design: The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Uninove (CAAE: 13991413.4.0000.5511) and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02021357). Sample size calculation was performed based on a pilot study, using the mean difference (6.0mm*3.5) between pre and post-treatment moments after 12 sessions
Setting: University Nove de Julho
Participants: The estimated number for each group was 9 individuals. Considering potential dropouts, an additional 20% was recruited for each group, resulting in a total of 33 individuals diagnosed with TMD randomly assigned to 3 groups
Interventions: G1 exercise (hyperboloid combined with tongue-palate exercise), G2 exercise (hyperboloid), and G3 (control)
Main Outcome Measures: Mandibular range of motion
Results: : In the within-group analysis, significant effects were confirmed for the post-treatment data collected in G1 and G2. No significant differences were observed for G3. The mean pre-treatment amplitude of movement for G1 was 31.04mm (±7.18), which increased to 39.39mm (±8.81) post-treatment, while for G2, the mean pre-treatment amplitude of movement was 36.32mm (±10.91), which increased to 44.25mm (±8.76) post-treatment. In both G1 and G2, there was a clinically important minimal difference, indicating a gain of at least 6mm.
Conclusions:
Conclusion: In both treatment groups, there was a clinically important increase in mandibular range of motion in patients with TMD. The application of proprioceptive exercises with a hyperboloid in TMD treatments yields satisfactory results when the objective is to improve mandibular range of motion.
