Enhancing Neurological Rehabilitation Through Dynavision Training: A Scoping Review

Research Objectives:

Background: As a visuomotor training device, the Dynavision is well suited to address a range of visual and motor impairments that often arise from neurological injuries, such as stroke and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). While current evidence on the uses of Dynavision in sport and exercise settings has been examined and compiled in previous reviews, a comprehensive review exploring the uses and benefits of Dynavision in neurological rehabilitation has not been undertaken.

Objectives: The objective of this scoping review was to compile current literature on Dynavision in neurological rehabilitation to determine how Dynavision can be used to promote functional recovery in individuals with neurological injuries, thereby informing evidence-based practice for clinicians.

Design: Scoping review

Setting: NA

Participants: NA

Interventions: Dynavision D2 based training. Four databases were searched using a scoping review methodological framework. Articles were screened by two authors according to inclusion criteria and duplicates were removed before extracting and organizing data to present the results. Review articles and articles focused on military and athletic settings were excluded.

Main Outcome Measures: NA

Results: Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Most participants were males who had experienced a stroke or TBI. Only two randomized control trials met inclusion criteria. Dynavision was used as an assessment and intervention tool to address a variety of visual, cognitive, and motor deficits in adults with neurological injuries.

Conclusions: Minimal research has been completed on how Dynavision training can be used in neurorehabilitation. Thus far, Dynavision has been used as both an intervention and assessment tool for individuals' post-stroke or TBI. More rigorous research is needed with controls groups and female participants to better understand and establish best practices for Dynavision in neurological rehabilitation, including the length and intensity of intervention sessions.
