The Initiative to Mobilize Partnerships for successful Assistive teChnology Transfer (IMPACT)

Research Objectives: To foster innovation and enrich the lives of disabled individuals through comprehensiveAssistive Technology Tech Transfer (ATTT) strategies.

Design: The study design employed a multifaceted approach encompassing quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and training interventions.

Setting: The study was conducted within the broader context of the academic and entrepreneurial landscape. The setting encompasses universities, research institutions, and entrepreneurial ventures, with a focus on enhancing Assistive Technology Tech Transfer. The study also engaged a diverse range of participants from academia, industry, and healthcare.

Participants: A total of 32, 14, and 6 teams completed Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the multi-phase training program, respectively. The barriers and facilitators survey reached out to 652 current and former NIDILRR grantees and the KTDRR Community of Practice. Subsequently, 24 follow-up interviews were conducted to gain more nuanced insights into the identified barriers and facilitators.

Interventions: The present study integrated Likert scale and multiple-choice questions in surveys to gauge barriers and facilitators in Assistive Technology Tech Transfer (ATTT). Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted to delve deeper into survey respondents’ experiences. A three-phase training intervention using the Quality Implementation Framework was designed to enhance technology transfer readiness.

Main Outcome Measures: The Technology Transfer Readiness Assessment Tool (TTRAT) was employed to measure teams’ progress and program efficacy. In addition, a self report barriers and facilitators survey was used to gather insight on grantee experiences.

Results: Our barriers and facilitators study unveiled common themes, including lack of funding, incentives, and collaboration. The training program demonstrated enhanced technology transfer readiness through increased TTRAT scores, with tangible outcomes like follow-on funding and awards, FDA designations, and sales of products and services.

Conclusions: Our holistic approach offers a promising avenue for ATTT. By addressing barriers and introducing impactful training, innovative assessment, and supplementary tools, the IMPACT Center empowers researchers and entrepreneurs to catalyze transformation. In harmony with ACRM's mission, these endeavors hold the potential to create substantial positive change for individuals with disabilities.
