Improved Dissemination Strategies for Equitable Global Access to Spanish Language Burn-Related Education Resources: Increasing Engagement Using Burn Model System Resources

Research Objectives: To increase global promulgation of consumer-tested, Spanish language Burn Model System online resources.

Design: Interrupted time series analysis

Setting: Burn Model System (BMS) and Model System Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) websites

Participants: Participants reflected by number of unique views of a resource on the websites.

Interventions: BMS/MSKTC develops and consumer-tests educational resources regarding burn injury and recovery using a validated, evidence-based process. Support for people recovering from burn-injury in Spanish-speaking countries is critical given that Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) carry an increasing burden of disease from burn-injury. Sequential enhanced dissemination strategies were implemented to increase global engagement to include: i) qualified translation of resources into Spanish (2013), ii) development of a Spanish-language resource website (2021), and iii) dissemination via biennial International Society for Burn Injuries Congress (2022).

Main Outcome Measures: Engagement was measured by number of factsheet, infocomic, and video downloads/views. Differences in proportion of Spanish-speaking country downloads/views before and after 2021-2022 dissemination strategy enhancements.

Results: Since 2013, there has been a 370% increase in engagement in BMS/MSKTC downloads/views. Within the top 10 countries of website visit origin, the proportion of downloads/views from Spanish-speaking countries increased from 0 (0/412,558 downloads/views) to 25% (123,029/484,122 downloads/views) after our dissemination strategy enhancements (p < 0.001). In 2022, 4 Spanish-speaking countries were in the top 10, 3 of which were in Latin America (Mexico, Argentina, and Columbia).

Conclusions: Intentional dissemination strategies have assisted in increasing engagement of people in primarily Spanish-speaking countries. Continued dissemination strategies are required to expand global promulgation to other populations who would benefit from burn-related education resources.
