Use of Occupation-Based Outcome Measure and Strength-Based Self-Report with Persons with Substance Use Disorders: A Prospective CohortStudy

Research Objectives: To investigate Use of Occupation-Based Outcome Measure and Strength-Based Self-Report with Persons with Substance Use Disorders:

Design: This study used a cross-sectional design to explore the use of the OCAIRS coupled with the VIA-IS-P with a forensic substance use/mental
health population. No follow-up

Setting: The setting of the study took place in a forensic lockdown, inpatient facility for department of correction inmates receiving residential treatment

Participants: This study used a convenience sample of 18 participants, all female, all w/co-occurring disorders, all part of Department of Corrections (DOC).

Interventions: N/A - no interventions

Main Outcome Measures: Occupational Circumstances Assessment Interview Rating Scales (OCAIRS)

The Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS-P)

Results: OCAIRS: Seventeen (94%) and 15 (83%) clients were assessed with a current or immediate past role and habit that inhibited occupational participation, 15 (83%) reported their social environment inhibited occupational participation. Six (33%) clients showed that their current or past interests restricted occupational participation.

Regarding VIA-IS-P personal strengths identified by the VIA-IS-P, 11 (78%) of the participants reported prudence and self-regulation as lesser strengths, and 10 (71%) reported perseverance as a lesser strength.

Conclusions: The highest frequency of the inhibit rating within this population came from the roles factor with 94% of participants indicating that their roles
inhibited occupational participation. Bradley et al. (2011) reported that 50% of their respondents also had an inhibit rating for the role factor. They also reported that their population experienced substance use with 87% declaring this during the interview.

In this study participants who scored a 1 or 2 rating (Restrict or Inhibit) within the FAIR scale were considered in need of occupational therapy services using the OCAIRS v4 as a baseline measure. This is in agreement with the study by Haglund et al. (1998) where 85% of clients receiving general psychiatric care who were selected for OT scored a 1, 2, or 3 within the systems trajectory component of the previous version of the OCAIRS (p. 201
