Journey to 1-Million Steps: A Retrospective Case Series on Implementation of Robotic Assisted Gait Training into an Outpatient Pediatric Clinic

Research Objectives: The purpose of this retrospective case series is to describe the implementation of this new technology into an already established outpatient therapy clinic; highlighting the key features of the development of a robotic assisted gait training program including collaboration and elements of design thinking that occurred with the Trexo team in Canada during the one million step timeline.

Design: Three examples of patient care will be discussed to review outcomes and development opportunities that occurred while each patient was contributing to walking one million steps.

Setting: Outpatient physical therapy center.

Participants: This is a case series of three pediatric patients who attended outpatient physical therapy. The patients are between 3-5 years of age and have differing diagnoses as their cases were selected at random for retrospective review.

Interventions: The primary intervention was the Trexo exoskeleton, which is a pediatric robotic assisted gait trainer used for rehabilitation of deficits after injury or due to illness.

Main Outcome Measures: Tolerance to device, Total Steps, Goal Attainment, Anecdotal parent report

Results: Data will be presented on three pediatric cases of neurodiverse individuals who participated in the journey to a million steps.

Conclusions: Inadequate physical fitness is a major problem for individuals with neurologic disorders, ultimately impacting their health and function. Use of an exoskeleton improved participation in physical therapy and improved goal attainment. The process of Design Thinking is applicable to healthcare professionals and improves clinical care.
