Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling for Mild Scoliosis: Improving Rotation, Alleviating Low Back Pain, and Decreasing Cobb Angle

Research Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided dry needling (DN-US) in treating mild scoliosis and associated LBP by decreasing malrotation and Cobb angle.

Design: This study was designed as a prospective, observational study.

Setting: The study was conducted in a clinical setting of multidisciplinary clinical hospital.

Participants: A total of 18 patients with scoliosis, postural imbalance, and myofascial low back pain were enrolled in the study. Inclusion criteria were a Cobb Angle of 10-20 degrees and a minor spinal asymmetry, while exclusion criteria were a Cobb Angle greater than 20 degrees, rheumatic conditions, cancer, trauma, paresis, or advanced injury of the spine.

Interventions: The main outcome measures of this study were the restoration of movement and a decrease in pain after muscle dry needling. In addition, the study evaluated changes in Cobb angle, axial rotation, and posture.

Results: All patients experienced a decrease in pain and an improvement in movement after muscle dry needling. The study also found that all patients had a decrease in Cobb angle by 5-10 degrees, and the angle of rotation was correlated with the Cobb angle. Muscle trigger points were revealed at the level close to the largest malrotation, and the position of the ribs improved after correcting malrotation.

Conclusions: The study concluded that ultrasound-guided dry needling is an effective therapeutic option for mild scoliosis and associated low back pain. The therapy can restore posture, decrease Cobb angle, and alleviate pain. Precisely searching for trigger points on the weaker side is crucial for an effective targeted approach. The study also highlights the importance of detecting posture imbalances in distant sites and restoring motion in relevant areas for a more comprehensive treatment approach.
